Lesharo Rear AC Plan

Unread postby RV4BT » Fri Sep 11, 2015 1:26 pm

I plan to install a window style 5000 btu AC in the rear of the RV with air circulation systems to bring fresh air in and bring the warm air out from the condenser. I did not describe it well, but I do plan to build a hood to go along the entire back of the AC unit to capture all of the expelled warm condenser air.

I will take pictures as I do the work so others may benefit. Here is an overall drawing of the planned layout.

Awaiting the 5,000 btu window AC to arrive at the Walmart. I will fully install it next week. Here are some images of the work so far.

This failed miserably.

Exhaust temps for ac fresh air vent was to high, just no better way to do this except a rear air out the back mounted between dining seats. I will post pics tomorrow.

Be careful not to draw in outside air at the back. Think exhaust fumes.
Glad you are thinking outside the box, always nice to see different ideas.

This so failed. The intake was using the old heater vent and had a inline 6" power vent and the exhaust the same going out the wheel well. I tested and realized the exhaust them was approaching 150 degrees! The small box area behind the AC was not large enough to do this. I now have is placed between the two back seats below the dining table and it runs nice. The bed can go down and cools it pretty well. I am afraid the 5000 BTU will not handle super hot summers so more experimenting to do. I will post pictures soon. It runs, it works, but unless I can control the heat gain through the windows and front it is a lost cause. I am looking into how to reduce heat gain so that just maybe the 5000 window ac will handle it and if not a 8,000 btu certainly will. I am resisting the temptation to do the 13,500 btu roof AC.

Ken,
Here's a link to a Central AC unit done by Jon Inbody.
http://www.lesharorv.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=243&p=742#p742
He did a 3.8 conversion then removed the rooftop ac unit and installed a window ac unit under the rear dinette/bed. He dissected it and I thought his adaptation was great. Check it out, it might be a solution to your dilemma.
Keep up the good work.
